Julie Lindh
Julie Lindh Offers Eco-Conscious and Clinical Approach to Skin Care
Julie Lindh is a world-renowned aesthetician who offers an integrated skin care perspective; she believes that the secret to beautiful, healthy and younger-looking skin lies in a lifestyle that nurtures the mind, body and spirit from an eco-conscious and clinical approach. Lindh believes nature offers the solution to radiant, younger-looking skin, but that each one of us is individually responsible for our own well-being and the environment.
As one of the most sought after skin care specialists in the country, Lindh has been the master mind behind successful skin care menus and treatments at several prestigious spas, including Exhale and Townhouse Spa in New York City. High-profile clients looking for healthy, younger-looking skin call on Julies expertise.
Her unique approach to skin care is well-known throughout the industry. She has garnered media attention and received coverage in lifestyle publications and television shows, including Allure, American Spa, W, Essence, Glamour, Organic SPA, Cosmopolitan, the New York Times, Mens Health, Vogue, and many others.
Having worked in the skin care industry since the age of eighteen, she wanted to apply her expertise to the creation of high-quality, results-oriented treatments that are not only simple to use, but also reflect an eco-conscious lifestyle.
In 2007, Lindh decided to expand from her master skin care brand, Lindh Logix in Natural Dermal Health to include a go green-based products. She brought her vision to an eco-conscious laboratory known for their high standards to quality control and sustainable practices. Lindh and a team of botanists hand picked plants abundant in antioxidants and formulated Tea Berry Line and Antioxidant Skin Care Make Up line.
Mind-Body-Spirit Connection to Radiant Skin Begins with Family Tradition
Lindh credits her Javanese and Swedish heritage as the foundation to helping her understand the mind-body-spirit connection to beauty. Growing up with both cultures, she learned a disciplined, yet spiritual approach to beauty. As part of her familys legacy, Lindhs grandfather, a well-respected shaman from Sumatra, taught Julie ancient and natural recipes for a healthy, beautiful body. From herbal teas to ritual cleansing baths, Lindh learned to harness the power of nature as a key ingredient to a healthy and balanced lifestyle. In her teen years she moved to Sweden to live with her father, a quantum physics engineer, whom she recognizes as bringing a scientific perspective to beauty. On her fifteenth birthday, she was treated to her first European facial. She knew right then that she had just discovered her lifes passion, skin care.
Trained with the Best in the Industry
Julie Lindh is a licensed skin specialist who has trained in the United States and Europe. Among her many accomplishments, Lindh was fundamental to the success of Exhale Spa, where her innovative and results-oriented treatments helped evolve it from a novel yoga center to a transformational spa. Lindh quickly earned the title of National Skin Care Director at Exhale Spa and was responsible for creating and overseeing the spas protocol for skin care treatments, menus and training programs for all locations.

Currently, Lindh is a consultant to established and start up businesses who are looking to enhance or add skin care therapy to their list of services. Lindh customizes skin care plans to the needs of each client and provides a team of highly trained aestheticians as part of her select program.

SKIN CORRECTION
Diamond dermabrasion, sonic polisher and epidermal leveling are few of the skin resurfacing technique I use in my skin fitness facial. Skin correction is necessary to help remove the top layers of dead skin cells and minimize imperfections on the surface of the skin. For dark spots, fine lines, acne scars, dry patches and more.
My treatment always include several different types of enzyme and acid peels. A great add ons to help rejuvenate, increase micro circulation in skin, minimize fines lines, control acne, lighten hyperpigmentation and fasten cell renewal.
These procedures will help your skin health back in shape and stay corrected.
SKIN RENOVATION
Just like the body, your facial muscles need a fitness as well. Gravity and aging process makes your skin to look sagging and tired. To address this issue, I chose to work with beauty instrument common term non-surgical facelift. One of celeb's secret to look lifted and toned on red carpet and instant transformation. Combining micro-current, ultra sound contouring and photon light therapy, your face will get the workout it needs to stay looking young long-term.
An absolut must in my skin fitness facial!
I recommend 6 weeks skin renovation program as a booster and monthly for maintenance purpose.
SKIN REJUVENATION
I chose Hyperbaric Oxygen, collagen infusion, LED spectrum light therapy and ultrasonic therapy for hydration, repairing and post treatment to complete my skin fitness facial. These methods will help to promote natural collagen and elastin production, improving skin texture and visibly smoothes fine lines and wrinkles. They will also contribute to calm sensitive skin, rid of inflammations and speed up nutrient absorption.
Your skin will look plumper, smoother, hydrated and a beautiful glow. This part we just cannot ignore.
SKIN PREVENTION
I have created 2 skin care lines for skin correction, skin renovation and skin prevention to be part of your home care regime in between facials. The more you take care of your skin health the better the result you will notice with my skin fitness treatments long-term. Prevention of future sun damage, wrinkles developments, control active acne and breakouts are important reasons why you should always find the right ingredients for your skin .
If you want to keep the results you have achieved with my skin fitness facials, I suggest you maintain your visits every 6-8 weeks.
SKIN FOOD
I believe in the internal cell feeder, which is through food. Here are some of the greatest food types for your skin.
- Water, water and water (skin's best friend)
- Salmon, nuts, avocado (keeps wrinkles at bay)
- Berries (antioxidant force)
- Green, Black, White and Red Teas (fights free radicals)
SUPPLEMENTS
- Essential vitamins and minerals
- Omega 3, 6 and 9
- Hyaluronic Acid and collagen
- Rose Hip, alpha lipoic acid
- Acidophilus
- Chloropyhll
Why do you call your facial the Lindhmethod?
My clients actually invented the name. They always ask me, What's on the menu today? Since I don't have a set menu, I target the individual needs of my clients. This is how the Lindhmethod facial was born.
What is the Lindhmethod facial?
A facial that is customized to the individual needs of each client. From my experience in skin care I realized that everyone wants more than just a pampering facial, they want results. I have incorporated the two. This doesn't mean I am the only one offering a customized regimen, but it all comes down to how well you understand the skin. Its an art to intuitively know which method will benefit the client best. Every skin type differs. Depending on the clients diet, lifestyle, product usage, past treatments and age I have to make sure they all go well together.
With the Lindhmethod facial which I use tools and ingredients to address and correct skin imperfections, that yields long-term results. This could mean peels, epidermal leveling, dermabrasion, micro-current, photo-light therapy, lymphatic drainage, ultra sound, oxygen, CIS (collagen induction system), vibrating or cupping method. All these tools work and address each layer to maintain good skin health.
How about skin care product for home use?
Well, I created Lindh Logix skin care line to help maintain results at home. The line works on all skin types and includes serums to correct skin. Its a simple but effective pharmaceutical grade line, affordable and compatible to many high-end lines out there. I am also creating an Antioxidant line with Lindh Logix to combat stressed skin. A big concern for my clients.
This doesnt mean that you must use my line in order to see me for the facials. You may use whatever works as long as it addresses your skin needs. I educate my clients about their skin and they decide what they chose to do. I support my clients decisions while trying to complement their choices with my recommendations.
How long is the facial and how much does it cost?
The Lindhmethod facial cost $300. Its like having 4 facials in one session. This includes cleansing, correction, renovation and rejuvenation of the skin without surgery. Well thought advanced treatment using state of the arts equipment. This type of facial would normally cost over $800 as an individual service or even more in a physicians office. The facial takes 75 to 90 minutes.
Who are your clientele?
They are men and women who invest in their skins health. Their ages range from 20 years and above. They are in media, TV, music, fashion, finance, they range from socialites , baby boomers, Gen Xers, professionals and the everyday person you see on the street who commits to their whole skin health.

Face Diaries
Are you wondering how I look almost like a teenager though I am in my 30s?
I have a few secrets - my commitment to pleasure is one of them, eating well - another, yoga - a third, but there's a fourth that I am about to reveal to you for the first time - Julie Lindh, "skin fitness" expert.
I've had facials before that were lovely and pleasant, but the work of Julie Lindh, who visits NY from Stockholm every 2 months to visit her adoring clientele, is on a whole other plane - she calls it "skin fitness," for me it's been life changing. (And I don't say that lightly.)

Kellie visits the Mad Skin Specialist....!
I just wanted to share an amazing skin-care experience I just had over the weekend, that is perfect for brides ( and grooms ! )
On Saturday I found myself lying on my back in a small room in Downtown Manhattan as Julie Lindh of Lindh Cosmetics, applied a series of peels, masks and cleansing lotions to my face
The reason ? Every time I ran into a friend of mine she looked younger and younger each time I saw her. What was her secret ? After I pried it out of her, (Julie Lindh !)I made an appointment and arrived for a quick 'facial'.
This turned out to be more like 3 facials in 1, because Julie approaches each clients' needs individually and tailors the treatments as needed, drawing from a wide range of techniques, potions and lotions.
Mine started with dermaplaning - which is like having your skin scraped with a dull knife, lifting dead skin off and giving your face a fresh look. Then she applied a series of peels, followed by cleansing lotions and tonics.
Next was a machine that feels like a metal robot-hand pinching your skin! (I later learned this is called Micro-current and brings oxygen to blood cells that feed the muscle fibers).
Then came a repair and hydration treatment using light therapy.
I spent about one and a half hours in all, being pampered and treated by Julie - who calls herself The Mad Skin Specialist !
As far as I'm concerened we could all use a little more madness in our lives. Julie offers the perfect remedy for the bride who really wants to truly glow on her Wedding Day !

My experience with Julie was both unique and amazing. She really is incredible in her knowledge and skill with skincare. I've never experienced a facial so effective, without using layers upon layers of product and unnecessary treatments. She is a gem!

Julie Lindh is the absolute best. I am absolutely devoted to her facials and skin care line. Her deep knowledge of skin care make every trip worth while. The results are visible immediately and continue to build cumulatively with each visit. I am often complimented on my skin and on multiple occasions have had people that don't believe my age. They think I am 5 to 10 years younger! I will never go back to another facialist. Compared to her, they don't have close to her knowledge of skin and skin care. More importantly, other facialist with great reputations do so little in comparison to Julie. She is a skin care specialist with a wealth of information on skin care and facial treatments.
Julie's upbeat and fun personality makes seeing her enjoyable. She is always on the cutting edge of new technologies and trends in skin care. Every time I see her for a facial she modifies her treatments. Each time is unique. She incorporates all kinds of high-end treatments such as diamond peels, oxygen, peels, ultrasound, microcurrent, photo light facial and her cellulite treatment. I can't stand when facialists ask you half-way through a facial if you would like to add on a treatment you "really need" for an additional fee. Julie never charges you extra for her various methods and top-of-the-line treatments.
Skin care is extremely important to me. Julie's created her skin care line with the same extremely high standards she uses in her facials. She uses high quality ingredients that feel good on the skin and have improved the look of my skin. Julie doesn't rely on gimmicks. Instead she applied her high level of research and passion for skin care towards creating her product line. She has surpassed all my expectations and I would highly recommend her.

I am so excited that Julie Lindh is going to offer her exclusive skin care services and products in Dubai. Her method is truly spectacular and there really is no one offering this type of skin care in Dubai. Whenever I travel to New York City, she is one of the first persons I go visit. Julie knows how to work with your skin and make it glow. She has a special, magical touch that has always made me smile with delight at the results.

Loyal client of Julie Lindh who uses Lindh Logix products
Julie Lindh is part miracle worker, part scientist and the over-all best skin technician you will ever find to take care of you and make you look your best. Not only can she take spot your trouble areas, but she'll know why you're having the problem and exactly how to solve it. And, since she has created her own skin care line, she knows exactly what will work best for you. My skin looked and felt better after just one session, but the more I go, the better the results.
Recently, I had Julie use the Cupping Treatment on my face. It has an interesting, vacuuming-like feel as it circulates your blood and moves the fluids and energy around on your face. It worked really well and made my skin super vibrant and reduced the puffiness that I get under my eyes. If you have a problem with dark circles or bags under your eyes, this is the treatment for you!!
After having Julie's facial therapy and her many treatments, I would never go anywhere else and I'm certain you will feel the same.

I have known Julie only for about 3 months and in those 3 months my life has completely changed! Not only am I a client of hers, I have the privelage of working with her too. Every time I see Julie, i learn something new! She is so knowledgable about so many things; not only does she have unbelievably healing hands, she will always have answers for you when it comes to skin or health concerns. In a small amount of time, my skin has gone through some drastic changes with Julie; her Green Peel is amazing! I really do have new skin and a fresh start to keeping it that way. For the first time since before high school i feel confident walking into a room full of bright lights shining down on my face. I feel great walking down the streets! I am so lucky to have met her so soon after getting into the skin care industry. When she becomes famous everywhere, I will be so proud to say that I was a client and colleague of Julie Lindh.

Wow, Miss Julie. That green peel really made a different. Just after one time my discoloration decreased and my skin feels tighter. I can't wait to come in again when I'm back in New York and to try your new line. So exciting! Congratulations!

Jules, it was a pleasure meeting you last week. I love how my skin feels and got many compliments. Never thought redness on my chin and neck will ever go away. Your product helped to tone it down and I think less itchy. Thanks for a great product.
Chris
Julie, you changed my life. My skin looks smoother. The green peel is the way to go! My acne scars looks ten times better and acne on my back has minimized at least 30% only after that peel facial you did on me. I am so thrilled. I just hope I can keep the acne away this summer. Thank you and have a great b-day. Madeline Boss
All I can say is thank you, thank you for clearing up my skin. I had acne since I was young and tried everything from chemical peels, acutane, laser, you name it and spent thousands of dollars. When I first met Julie she educated me about my skin and what I needed. What I liked about her is that she is honest and very knowledgeable. I now only trust her with my skin and I can't wait to try her skin care line.
Elyssa Beck
I will never forget my husband's reaction after going to get my first facial with Julie. He was amazed at how great my skin looked. I've been seeing her monthly ever since that day in 2002. I trust her implicitly and will try any treatment and/or product she recommends for me. I have sent many friends and family members to Julie and they all love her as much as I do.
Katherine Fichthorn

Your face treatment is amazing!!! I see result in one session. My skin had the glow for days and everyone commenting on how smooth and healthy my skin looked. You mentioned my skin will look better and better with each oxygen treatment. I can't wait for my next session. Thank you so much for taking the time explaining the other day.
Much love, Penelope C
I recently tried a session with Julie and I have to admit that after one session I definitely saw a difference in my face. My skin had a glow and where some of my fine lines were (around my mouth) appeared to be filled in and not so noticable. Later on that day I had lunch with some friends and they asked me if I started using a different face product as my skin looked really good. I would highly recommend seeing Julie as these treatments really work. A Very Happy Customer,
Eileen Millan

I am quite the skeptic when it comes to facials, perhaps because of how sensitive my skin is, but when my business partner Metta came to work one day with buttery soft skin and feeling like her face had been magically lifted a couple of inches, I was intrigued. Metta had gotten the facial with Julie Lindh, who is considered one of the most sought-after natural facial rejuvenation experts in NYC. Of Indonesian and Swedish descent, Julie prefers to call herself a skin fitness specialist rather than aesthetician, since her specialty is to add a fitness dimension to her clients faces.
I met Julie at Yelo Spa in NYC on 57th Street near Columbus Circle where she sees most of her clients. The first thing you notice about her: Killer skin! The second thing: Julie is brutally honest no euphemisms there. You have a lot of callus on your skin, she remarks after feeling my skin. Excuse me? Ive stopped calling it dead skin cells because my clients dont really understand. When I call it callus, which is what it really is, they think of their feet and really understand how important it is to remove it. Indeed, the visual of my cracked heels makes me anxious to exfoliate
I call myself a skin fitness specialist because I incorporate machines in all my facials and because like a personal fitness trainer, I teach my clients and their skin. I am not about applying a couple of masks, massaging your skin and making you just feel good. My skin fitness approach is about targeting all 3 layers of your face:
1) First: correct imperfections on the surface: acne, discoloration, wrinkles, etc.
2) Second is prevention: repairing your collagen, strengthening your fibroblast.
3) Third is renovation: Perk things up, build muscle, correct the contours of your face. Here is where I use my photon light current machine which helps stimulate the muscles and create the lift. I start with a low current and increase with subsequent sessions, the same way that a personal fitness trainer will get you started on 5 lb dumbbells and increases the weights to keep your muscles challenged and stimulated. When I do repeated treatments on a client, I may even advise her to eat more protein to feed the muscles. It really is a fitness approach.
About Julies candidness: If youre afraid to hear the truth, then Julie is not the person for you. But if youre ready to get inspired by my approach, I will educate you more deeply, teach your body, your skin and most importantly tell you why I do what I do. I asked her what she considered the most common skincare mistake: Most people just follow the latest trends, focus on quick fixes, get impatient when they dont see instant results and then overdose on pretty much anything that promises a short cut. I tell my clients Look at yourself in the mirror everyday of your life and ask yourself everyday how do I want to look in 5 years. This common mistake does apparently not apply to Asian clients. Because Asian skin is so sensitive and takes so much longer to heal, Asian women are very risk averse and wont try as many new things. For example, they will only use Asian skincare lines but dont realize that there are differences amongst Asian skin types, too, and they dont really consider how their individual lifestyle and emotional state has an influence as well. Because Asians are so risk averse with their skincare, they need to find the right person they can trust, in order to try a new approach.
Freshly inspired by Julies philosophy, I laid down on the facials table. Due to my pregnancy, Julie was not able to use the micro current machine on me, but instead targeted the bumps and callous on my skin. She resurfaced my skin with crushed diamonds, followed by a milk acid peel which stung quite a bit. Breathe be strong. She ordered. I took a deep breath and tried to recall Mettas buttery soft skin. She finally relieved the stinging with a neutralizer, continued with extractions and completed the process by lightly scraping over my face with what felt like a smooth blade. It felt strangely therapeutic. This is one of my most popular resurfacing treatments, called epidermal leveling. Not a lot of spas offer this service because you have to be exceptionally skilled. Epidermal leveling is a unique and ancient resurfacing method considered a great exfoliating option for sensitive skin as it does not break capillaries or compromise healthy skin tissue. It not only removes dead skin cells, minimizes fine lines, depth of scars and slowly sloughs off discoloration on the skin, but it also removes unwanted facial hair, which results in a much brighter, even complexion. When Julie was done, not only was my skin buttery soft, but my cheek and chin area looked a couple of shades brighter, since all that fine facial hair was gone. Dont worry, itll grow back soft, not stubbly, she said, as if she read my mind.
Organic Facials for Dry, Winter Skin

TOPIC: Skin & Hair Care
AUTHOR: Care2
During the long winter months, its important to pay special attention to your skin. Skin loses its healthy glow, so you need to exfoliate more often, at least twice a week, says Julie Lindh, spa and skin care director at Townhouse Spa in New York City. A facial every six weeks is ideal for someone who needs a lot of extractions, she adds.
Other seasonal skin care tips? To retain moisture, make sure to use tepid, not hot water, when cleansing, advise the spa experts at Willow Stream The Spas at Fairmont. Opt for a gentle cleansing cream or milk instead of lipid-stripping soaps, and stay away from products that contain fragrance and irritating ingredients.
And as basic as it may seem, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate by drinking plenty of fluids. Add professional facials to the mix and your skin will thank you.

Aestheticians Who Get in Your Face

WHEN Isabel Dassinger arrived at Townhouse Spa with its mother-of-pearl walls and roaring fireplace, she was anticipating an afternoon of coddling. But just as Ms. Dassinger, 50, had relaxed under a heated blanket, the rebuke of her facialist, Julie Lindh, put her on edge. If you dont stay out of the sun and use the products I suggest, Ms. Lindh warned, you will have saggy skin, jowls, and look like someones grandmother in a couple of years.

Better Baths
Being relaxed and de-stressed is essential for a good night's rest, so hop into that tub right now! "When you're in the bath, there's not much you can do," says Julie Lindh, an aesthetician at Townhouse Spa, in New York City. It's this nothingness that prompts your mind to unwind and ditch the worries of the day. Too busy to take a nightly bath? Lindh says that even a 15-minute soak in a tub filled with hot water, sea salts, and essential oils will deliver maximum benefits. "After five minutes your pores open up, during the next five minutes you start to absorb the ingredients, and after five more minutes you should ease off," says Lindh, adding that in a pinch a shower will do, too. Lather up with one of the new relaxing shower gels formulated with sleep-inducing essential oils.

How to Spa: Answers to Questions You're Afraid to Ask
By Anuja Madar
You're not loaded, you don't have the perfect body, and you hate your feet. Chances are that the 32 million Americans who, according to the International SPA Association (ISPA), headed to spas in 2006 have the same issues, only they pushed them aside for the greater good -- themselves.
ISPA's 2006 survey reveals that the spa industry is growing in the U.S., with almost 14,000 facilities, about a 16% increase from 2004. Day spas make up the bulk of the country's spas, with the southwest and northeast housing the majority. And, it's not just women who are seeking relaxation -- 31% of all spa-goers in the U.S. and 29% of those in Canada are men, who site stress relief and soothing sore muscles as their main reasons for visiting spas. The number of male spa-goers jumps to 36% when it comes to spa travel, which is often linked to specific destinations and focuses on treatments that employ indigenous ingredients and practices. The U.S. and Mexico are the top picks for people planning spa vacations, and travelers are more likely to spend their extra cash on a visit to the spa rather than a day of shopping. "Going to a spa is like investing in yourself," Julie Lindh, spa director at Townhouse Spa NYC, says. "There should be no price tag when it comes to making yourself feel good."
http://www.frommers.com/articles/4339.html
Although fitness plays a key role, skincare is no less important in the Exhale formula. According to Eschbach, the skincare program is extremely advanced. "We offer a unique skincare program designed to give guests results, but the clinical skincare services are delivered with a holistic touch, fusing holistic and clinical for the first time," she says. GET GLOWING WITH: An enzyme peel. "Enzymes act like Pac-Man, eating up dead skin cells to reveal a radiant skin tone and velvety texture," explains skin-care specialist Julie Lindh of Exhale Spa in New York City. The enzymes that come from fruits and vegetables - such as grapes, pineapple, pumpkin, berries - offer milder alternatives to alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or scrubs.
DESIGNATE ME-TIME: Schedule the treatment one to three days before a party.

Working for the Weak Ends
New York City's Exhale Mind Body spas have a resolutely results-oriented philosophy: "We couldn't put just any hair products in our showers," says Julie Lindh, the spas' top skin-care specialist. So Exhale created its own hardworking nourishing shampoo and conditioner, with green tea and seaweed to smooth hair shafts and keep them hydrated.

Stop holding your breath. New York City's Exhale Spa now has a Boston location. In addition to spa treatments and mind-body classes, the Back Bay space has a boutique stocked with skin-care products and candles to help you create an oasis in your own batheroom. "Start by surrounding your bathtub with aromatherapy candles - the green tea and rose scents are popular - or adding a few drops of aromatherapy oil to the bath itself," says Julie Lindh, Exhale's skincare director. For an experience similar to Exhale's true transformation facial, Lindh offers these simple at-home steps: 1. Cleanse skin with a gentle cleanser. 2. Exfoliate skin with a mixture of three tablespoons of oatmeal and enough sour cream for the desired consistency. 3. Add a pinch of fresh rosemary to a bowl of hot water and hold your face in the steam above the bowl for five minutes. Reserve rosemary water. 4. Combine one tablespoon of pumpkin puree (available at local supermarkets) with a few drops of fresh grapefruit juice and one teaspoon of mashed avocado. Apply the mixture to your face and neck, and leave on for five to eight minutes. 5. Rinse off pumpkin mask, cleanse skin and rinse with rosemary water. 6. Apply your favorite moisturizer. Finish the session by "lounging on the couch in a comfy robe and slippers with a heated neck pillow," says Lindh. You'll be breathing easier in no time.

Mini-facial
A do-it-yourself version from Julie Lindh, of Exhale Spas: Wash with warm water and a gentle cleanser. Blot dry. Slather on a microdermabrasion cream (we like Olay Regenerist Microdermabrasion & Peel System, $27) and gently massage into your skin in a circular motion for a minute. Rinse well with lukewarm water. Apply a facial mask and let sit ten minutes. Clay-based ones (Bioré Shine Control Clay Mask, $6) degrease oily complexions, while creamy versions (American Beauty Spare Moment Moisture Mask, $14) hydrate and soften dry skin. Rinse off mask, pat skin dry, and moisturize immediately (freshly scrubbed skin sops up lotion like crazy).

What's the Right Treatment for You?
From fast fixes to pure indulgences, Bazaar beauty editor Victoria Kirby discovers how to select the best service for your needs.
I admit it: I am a spa novice. I love the tension relief of a good massage and the radiance of my skin after a deep-cleansing facial, but I rarely venture beyond these basics. The endless array of options sounds lovely, but can you expect real results and benefits? According the the International Spa Association, skeptics like me are a shrinking minority. Americans spent $11.2 billion at spas in 2003, more than double the $5 billion spent in 1999. Clearly, it was time for me to get out and test the therapeutic waters, so I embarked on a treatment binge in New York City, determined to discover exactly what the hottest services deliver.
Body Laser Treatment, $125 for 30 minutes. Can a laser promote lymphatic flow, resulting in tighter, smoother skin on such trouble spots as the thighs, waist and butt? I gave it a whirl at the results-oriented Exhale Mind Body Spa, where it's claimed that twice-weekly sessions of Body Detox Therapy can have you looking better in two weeks. My aesthetician, Julie Lindh, slipped on coarse exfoliating gloves and spent several minutes vigorously sloughing my thighs and butt to jump-start my circulation, then applied a seaweed extract to calm the mild stinging (and supposedly draw out toxins). Next, she placed the laser device, which looked like a round paddle, onto my thigh. I anticipated painful zapping, but all I felt was the cool metal surface. Each leg was treated for about seven minutes. I was instructed to drink water and avoid food for the next hour so my system could focus on flushing out impurties. The next day, my skin looked and felt tighter, leading me to believe that the full treatment regimen could yield major results.

Transformational Health
Rosewood Magazine
New York is not a resort town. True, it's an island surrounded by water, and a destination (albeit often for serious shopper during sale season). Beautiful? Yes. But the Big Apple is not known as a place the overworked and weary come to relax. That's not to say that New yorkers don't enjoy a spa experience - monthly facials and massages as often as once a week are not unheard of in a busy New Yorker's schedule. But both need to be efficient and if results aren't forthcoming than Gothamites won't bother. -- Rima Suqi
Annbeth Eschbach was acutely aware of this when she decided to open Exhale, a sleek and modern day spa conveniently located across the street from The Carlyle on the Upper East Side of New York City (a Central Park South location is scheduled to open in early 2004). A former president of the International Health, Racquet, and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA), Eschbach has over two decades experience in the industry.
Her philosophy is simple. "Everything we do here has to be transformational. We don't do anything that's foo foo. This is about giving people noticeable results," she explained. "Under one roof we offer skin therapies that are designed to give you visible results, high-quality body therapies, and yoga and Core Fusion toning classes. We're taking care of you from the inside out." Indeed, the women (and men) of New York clamor for Core Fusion. The class, featured as a "Best Of" in New York Magazine, was developed especially for Exhale by Elisabeth Halfpapp and Fred DeVito, a couple who together have over 37 years of training in flexibility, abdominal strength, and rehabilitation techniques. Small class size means extra personal attention, which is key in a workout that mixes and matches moves from Pilates, yoga, core-conditioning, and orthopedic stretching. It's strenuous but doable, personal but not preachy. And packed - there are over 12 classes offered every weekday; six each on Saturday and Sunday. People actually travel from all over the city to take the class, a rarity in a town where even the most avid workout fanatics stick to gyms in their own zip code.
While the spa isn't hard-sell on beauty products, the best stuff is used in the actual treatments and not available for sale. The spa offers four types of facials, ranging from Pure Results (a basic, cleansing facial) to a neck and decollete facial. The magic, however, is in the add-ons. Eschbach recruited skincare specialist Julie Lindh, an often called "miracle worker" with a huge following, to help develop the skincare menu. It includes what Lindh often refers to as the "natural and unnatural" approach. The natural might be a Spirulina Firming Mask (rich in proteins, used to tighten pores and even-out the complexion) or a Topical Peel (in which enzyme, glycolic, or lactic acids are used to exfoliate and refine the skin). The unnatural is proprietary to Exhale and, in today's market, is the beauty version of The Holy Grail. It's called "Cool Laser Therapy," and, as the name implies, involves using targeted laser light to tone and stimulate skin tissue without burning or scarring. It's offered alone or as an add-on to any other facial (take it from a formerly cyncial journalist - it works!).
Massages here range from the basic Fusion massage (the technique ranges from fairly vigorous to calming depending on desired state of mind afterwards) to Four Handed massage (two masseuses work in tandem on one very lucky body) to Prenatal massage (very appropriate in a town seemingly teeming with pregnant women). Other treatments include acupuncture, guided mediation, and waxing. And, of course, manicures and pedicures.
Clearly, Exhale has it. The right mix of work and play, the simple but serene architecture, the intimate, non-intimidating environment. It is also a draw for another, often overlooked reason. The Madison Avenue spa is just steps away from some of New York's best shopping. Hence, the efficiency. Pop in at Jimmy Choo for a pair of stilettos, then to exhale for a facial, followed by one of the best martinis in town, right across the street at Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle.Guests of the famed hotel (where Bobby Short and Eartha Kitt still croon on a regular basis) receive a pass for a free class upon check-in. Should they become addicted, it might be comforting to know that Exhale plans to open spas in Boston and Chicago in the next year, with more to follow.

A new brand is poised to take the concept of a mind-body spa to the masses in major cities throughout the country.
-- Heather Mikesell
This past September, exhale mind body spa opened its doors on Madison Avenue to those looking for something beyond beauty rituals and pampering treatments. The premise behind Exhale was to create a spa akin to a destination-like spa in the heart of the city. Integrating wellness, fitness, and relaxation, the spa offers results-oriented treatments with innovative fitness offerings. "Exhale was born to give urban dwellers an accessible retreat where they can improve their inner and outer well-being on a daily basis," say founder and chief executive officer Annbeth Eschbach. "As such, all of our services and programs must meet one criteria: They must be transformational in nature." The model initially began with the idea of combining yoga and spa. However, Eschbach soon modified that idea after getting to know Elisabeth Halfpapp and Fred DeVito, two former instructors of the Lotte Berk Method. The Lotte Berk Method is a form of exercise developed by dancer Lotte Berk that focuses on isolating different muscles to build core stability. Interested in creating a trademarked class, Eschbach teamed up with Halfpapp, who now serves as vice president of mind-body programming at Exhale, and DeVito, vice president of mind-body training. Together, Halfpapp and DeVito drew on their Lotte Berk experience to create Core Fusion, a mind-body class that draws on the disciplines of Pilates, yoga, core-conditioning, and orthopedic stretching. Exhale also offers a yoga program, which includes workshops, retreats, and master classes. According to Eschbach, the yoga and Core Fusion classes combined have already attracted a following of approximately 4,000 enthusiasts.
Once the concept was in place, it was presented to potential investors. According to Eschbach, in Exhale's favor was the fact that it was seen as a tremendous concept in line with the times in a post 9-11 world. There was also the fact that the people Eschbach chose to involve comprised a seasoned management team with experience in bringing comparable projects to fruition. Eschbach, herself, has more than 20 years in the athletic club and spa industry and directed the launch of New York City's Peninsual Spa in the Peninsula Hotel and the Away Spa in the W Hotel, among others. Julia Sutton, Exhale's chief operating officer, recently directed 10 spas across the country as national spa operations manager for Wellbridge, one of the largets health club chains in the nation.
